Christian Healing

While medicine, soft tissue therapies, manipulation, nutrition, surgery, mental attitude/mindfulness training, and rehabilitative exercise can all play important roles in the process of healing, it is ultimately the life reparative forces of the human body itself that heals any condition. All of these other healing methods simply assist the body in its own repair process. While you can heal without many of these therapies, the one necessary ingredient we all need for healing is to be alive. Without life, there is no healing. This intangible and scientifically elusive force that keeps us alive and heals us has been called "innate intelligence" by chiropractors, "chi" by eastern healing arts, and simply "life" by most.

While some may accept this life force as simply something that exists, I personally believe it is a gift from above, and that all healing is therefore ultimately from God. While earlier in my life I would have "rolled my eyes" at this "spiritual" notion, I have found through experience that this is the core of all healing. Of course, one cannot prove or disprove the existence of God, and I respect everyone's freedom of opinion on the subject. However, I have learned that reason and the scientific method are not applicable in the subject of divinity or its healing power. God works on the opposite side of reason and science through something called "faith". It is not something to be proved or disproved-you either decide to believe or not. However, if you do, faith in His promises may open many healing doors that would have otherwise remained closed.

As a Christian, I have experienced healing with my patients (as well as on a personal level) that was impossible without faith in God. As a former "educated atheist", and later "reasoned agnostic", I would have never imagined this to be possible before I witnessed it myself. Through the power of faith and prayer, many of my patients have improved far greater than could have otherwise been possible. At one point in my personal life, I had almost every one of my major joints screaming in pain. I had biomechanical compensations all over my body that were causing as much pain as the original injuries themselves. Even with all of my expertise and treatment, the pain and loss of sleep were de-railing my life. I recovered almost instantly through deep prayer and a belief that God not only could and wanted to, but definitely was healing me.

While I realize there are skeptics (I was once one myself), and plenty of rational "reasons" why the human belief system can change our physiologic healing without a possibility of divine intervention, I can only tell you that through pragmatic experience, I not only fully believe, but utilize this remarkable "grace from above" on a daily basis to help myself and my patients. I have found that building a relationship with God is the absolute one facet of life that I would never want to miss out on. What about you?

Faith is a purely personal decision. No one but you can decide whether to believe or not. I can only offer my own experience as I know how much it has helped my patients and myself. Obviously, besides pain relief, building a relationship with God is a life changing journey. While I do not know your views or approach to life, my own personal philosophy has always been heuristic in nature. I have always looked at the risk versus the benefit of trying something new, and then testing it. In the case of my initial willingness to believe, the only risk I imagined was losing my educated pride (both academic and life-experience based). I figured that, at the time, I had much more to gain if God's promises in the Bible proved to be true than if they didn't. If God was the most powerful, all knowing, most loving fountain of goodness, and had the greatest power wanting to heal me, then I would have to be a fool not to at least try. Little did I know just how great God can reward his believing children.

What I have found about Christian healing is that it works best with full faith in the Word of God. It is available to all who accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. Sometimes prayers are answered instantaneously, while at other times our patience and continued steadfast belief is tested for a while until we receive our reward. Sometimes, I can feel a difference in my pain the moment I pray and imagine God's power running through me. At other times, faith needs to be held onto through the darkest hours, when many would give up for lack of results. These results are often just waiting on the other side of that dark hour, day, week, month, etc. I have found that despite the time it takes for the gift to be delivered, faith ensures the delivery.

The process of healing may at times need to take place at a deep spiritual level first, before the outer body manifests changes. Sometimes, God is asking us to go deeper with Him than just addressing our pain. After all, He always wants the very best for us, and not to just "bandage " every present superficial trouble without healing us from the bigger and more important issues that are holding us back from His best. I can recall a time in my life when my own pain was about to break me, and it seemed my prayers and faith were not being answered. It turned out that God was waiting for me to release my cares and "love" of this world (including the priority and importance of my pain) and instead make Him my priority and only true importance. Once I released the importance of my selfish "worldly" desires, including my pain,  and proclaimed that God and His will were all that really mattered, my inner and outer healing began, and my pain began disappearing. I believe that God saw a bigger and deeper problem that I was suffering from (that I didn't even realize at the time), and He wanted to use what Satan had troubled me with as an aid in my recovery. I needed to learn the lesson and truth taught in the 1 John 2:15 scripture:  "If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him". I came out of that experience with something much greater than simple pain relief- I grew spiritually, and closer to God and His will for my life.

Remember that Jesus came for all of us-for sinners, for the broken hearted, for the prideful who think they do not need Him, for those who feel unworthy of Him, and for those who have no hope. I believe His desire is to heal all of us from every thing that separates us from Him- not just musculoskeletal pain. There is not a soul on earth who exists that He does not want to heal and save. He loves and desires to help us all-no exceptions. We only need to turn to Him as our Lord. Regardless of where you are now in life, what you have done, or what you have been through, He is waiting for you to take His hand, repent from sin, and allow Him to heal  you through faith in Him.

If you do not know where to begin, start reading the Bible for healing scriptures and what God promises his followers. There are many throughout both the Old and New Testament. If you do not have a Bible, use the internet. A Google search for "healing scriptures" will provide a long list of God's promises to heal his believers, who make an honest effort to repent and turn from sin and follow His ways, and who have faith and trust in Him. A local pastor or minister may be helpful. I have included some of my personal favorites below that I like to meditate on and use daily. Find one, two or three that resonate with you, and practice believing them each day. Recite them out loud, as well as in your mind and spirit, especially when any negative painful experience or thought presents itself. Over time, your faith will open many doors of wisdom, forgiveness, pain relief, and peace. It is not something that most would want to miss out on.

May God Bless You,
